Q: What is your full name?

A: Jennifer Althea

Q: What is your social media handle?

A: @iam_jennifer

Q: What was the moment you realized the cigars were more than just a hobby for you?

A: The moment I realized cigars were more than just a hobby was when I started to appreciate the experience beyond the smoke itself. It became about the conversations, the connections, and the sense of community. What started as simple curiosity turned into something much deeper. It created space for me to slow down, learn, and share moments with people from all walks of life. Over time, I realized cigars were not just something I enjoyed. They had become part of my lifestyle.

Q: Do you remember the first cigar that truly impressed you? What made it unforgettable?

A: The first cigar that truly impressed me was the Tabak by Drew Estates. I remember being blown away by how smooth and flavorful it was. Shortly after, I was introduced to Fat Bottom Betty, also from Drew Estates, and it really solidified my love for the brand. I always gravitate toward Drew Estates because of the sweetness, the aromatic smoke, and how consistently satisfying they are. No matter what I choose from them, it always hits just right.

Q: The cigar world has historically been male-dominated. What has your experience been like carving out your own space in the industry?

A: The cigar world has historically been male dominated, but my experience has actually been very positive. I came into the space simply enjoying cigars and appreciating the culture. Through lounges, events, and conversations, I built genuine connections with people who share the same passion. As a woman, I believe it is important to show up authentically and confidently. There is space for us here, and I think more women are realizing that. For me, it has been about enjoying the experience, contributing to the community, and carving out my own space while staying true to who I am.

Q: If you had one cigar and one dram to enjoy tonight, what would you choose and why?

A: That is a tough question because there are several cigars I really enjoy. But if I had to choose just one for the night, I would go with the E.P. Carrillo Pledge paired with an Old Fashioned. The Pledge has a rich, full flavor profile that I really appreciate, and it pairs beautifully with the balance of sweetness and bitters in an Old Fashioned. Together it creates a smooth, relaxing experience. It is the kind of pairing that makes it easy to slow down, unwind, and truly enjoy the moment.

Q: What is something about the cigar industry that most people would be surprised to learn?

A: One thing that might surprise people about the cigar industry is how strong the sense of community is. From the outside, people often focus on the cigar itself, but what really stands out is the culture around it. Cigars have a way of bringing people together. In lounges and at events you will find conversations happening between people from all different backgrounds who may have never crossed paths otherwise. There is a real appreciation for slowing down, sharing stories, and enjoying the moment together. For me, that sense of connection is one of the most special parts of the cigar world.

Q: What does the ritual of lighting a cigar mean to you personally?

A: The ritual of lighting a cigar is really about slowing down and being present in the moment. Unlike many other things, it cannot be rushed. From cutting the cigar to properly toasting the foot, there is a level of intention in the process. I always make sure the foot is evenly toasted because that helps create a nice, even burn and sets the tone for the entire experience. For me, that ritual is part of the enjoyment. It is a moment to pause, relax, and appreciate the craftsmanship behind the cigar before the first draw.

Q: How do you think women are changing or influencing cigar culture today?

A: I think women are influencing cigar culture by bringing more visibility and diversity to the space. More women are exploring cigars, attending events, and sharing their own personal experiences, which helps show that cigar enjoyment is not limited to just one type of person. What I love most is seeing women confidently enjoy cigars and making the experience their own. The presence of women continues to expand the culture in a positive way, which helps make the community feel even more welcoming and inclusive.

Q: If you could share a cigar with any person in history, who would it be and what would you smoke together?

A: If I could share a cigar with anyone in history, it would be Maya Angelou. She was such a powerful, inspiring, and authentic presence, and I would have loved to sit with her and hear her stories firsthand. My cigar of choice would be My Father’s Blue. It’s smooth and flavorful, with a richness that matches the kind of conversation I imagine having with her … thoughtful, layered, and unforgettable. I think sharing a smoke with someone like her would be a moment to slow down, reflect, and really savor both the cigar and the experience of connection.

Q: Is there a cigar brand or blend you think deserves far more recognition?

A: One brand I think deserves far more recognition is O. M. Cigars. I had the opportunity to meet the owner, Osvaldo Morales, at the Cigar & Lifestyle Expo last fall in Oaks, PA. It was my first time learning about his brand and its history, and I also got to experience an O. M. cigar firsthand. It was a great stick. It was smooth, enjoyable, and very well made. I think more people should know about the craftsmanship and quality behind this brand.

Q: For women curious about cigars but intimidated to try, what advice would you give them?

A: If you’re a woman curious about cigars but feeling a little intimidated, I’d say just start where you are. You don’t need to be an expert or worry about what anyone else thinks a cigar smoker should be. Find a lounge or space that feels comfortable to you and ask someone there for recommendations. Something sweet, mild, or infused is usually beginner-friendly. Part of the fun is slowing down, enjoying the ritual, and really being in the moment. At the end of the day, it’s your cigar and you should smoke it how you want, but there are a few etiquette tips you should definitely keep in mind. With the ash, never treat it like a cigarette. Let it burn and fall on its own because it actually helps the cigar burn better. Also, never inhale and never smoke on an empty stomach. And, if you ever find yourself lightheaded from smoking a cigar, just drink a regular Coke or any sugary soda, to immediately raise your blood sugar levels and counteract the effects of the nicotine.

Jennifer’s story reminds us that cigars are more than just a smoke—they’re an invitation to slow down, connect, and savor moments. Through her journey, she shows how passion, authenticity, and community can turn a simple hobby into a lifestyle, inspiring both new and seasoned cigar enthusiasts alike.
