Forget the stereotypes. In a world often associated with hushed gentlemen’s clubs and seasoned veterans, a new voice is rising through the fragrant plumes of premium tobacco. Meet Angel Marie Russell or as she is known on Instagram @ladyaficionada, the charismatic force captivating a growing audience with her insightful reviews, engaging content, and undeniable passion for the leaf. She’s not just enjoying a smoke; she’s shaping conversations, demystifying the world of cigars, and proving that this rich tradition has a vibrant place for everyone.

What initially drew you to cigars, and how did your passion for them evolve over time?

AMR: As a cigar enthusiast, I was initially drawn to cigars for their rich and complex flavors, the craftsmanship involved in their creation, and the sense of relaxation and contemplation that cigar smoking can bring. Cigars have a rich history and cultural significance in many parts of the world. Engaging with the cigar community allows me to learn about different traditions, practices, and stories, fostering a greater appreciation for the global cigar culture.

Do you have a favorite cigar that holds special meaning for you, and if so, why?

AMR: One such cigar that holds a special meaning for me is the Arturo Fuente Opus X. This cigar is not only celebrated for its exceptional quality and flavor but also holds a significant place in cigar history. The Opus X was the first successful Dominican puro, meaning it was made entirely from Dominican tobaccos. Before its creation, many believed that the Dominican Republic couldn’t produce wrapper leaves of high enough quality for premium cigars. The Fuente family’s dedication and innovation led to the creation of the Opus X, which proved the doubters wrong and set a new standard in the industry. For many aficionados, smoking an Opus X isn’t just about enjoying a cigar; it’s about appreciating the craftsmanship, history, and the Fuente family’s journey. It symbolizes overcoming challenges and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in cigar making.

What has your experience been like as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated cigar culture?

AMR: Like many women in the cigar world, I have found it to be both challenging and rewarding. We (women) often face stereotypes and biases, but we also encounter a sense of camaraderie and respect as we establish ourselves. Some women have become influential figures in the industry, owning cigar brands, writing about cigars, or participating in cigar events. We bring unique perspectives and contribute to the rich tapestry of cigar culture, often advocating for greater inclusivity and diversity. It’s inspiring to see how women have paved the way for others and continue to shape the cigar community.

Do you think the perception of women smoking cigars is changing, and if so, how?

AMR: Yes, the perception of women smoking cigars is indeed changing. Over the past few decades, there has been a noticeable shift toward greater acceptance and inclusivity in the cigar culture. More women are becoming visible in the cigar industry, from owning cigar lounges and brands to being prominent figures in media and events. This increased representation helps challenge stereotypes and normalizes the presence of women in the cigar community.

Are there any female-led cigar brands or tobacco farms that you admire and think deserve more recognition?

AMR: Absolutely! There are several female-led cigar brands and tobacco farms that have made significant contributions to the industry and deserve more recognition: La Faraona Cigars: Odelma Matos, the daughter of a tobacconist, has worked at practically every level of the cigar industry. She now owns and operates La Faraona Cigars in Ybor City, Florida, and runs two cigar lounges in the area; My Father Cigars: Janny Garcia, along with her father Jose “Pepin” Garcia and brother Jaime Garcia, runs the critically-acclaimed My Father Cigars brand. These women deserve recognition for their hard work, dedication, and contributions to the tobacco industry.

What are some of your favorite cigar and drink pairings, and do you have any recommendations for newcomers?

AMR: I’m a wine a cigar kind of girl so I tend to go for a rich, full-bodied cigar like the Oliva Serie V Melanio with a robust red wine such as a Cabernet Sauvignon. The cigar’s bold, leathery flavors complement the wine’s dark fruit and tannin structure. For the newcomer’s who like to drink wine, I recommend a medium-bodied cigar like the Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 2 with a Merlot. The wine’s soft, fruity notes pair nicely with the cigar’s creamy and slightly spicy profile.

How do you approach selecting a cigar—do you go by mood, occasion, or something else?

AMR: Selecting a cigar can be a delightful and personal experience, and it often depends on several factors such as mood, occasion, flavor preferences, and the time I have available to enjoy it. For the most part, I select my cigar based on my mood. If I’m feeling relaxed and contemplative, I might opt for a rich, complex cigar that I can savor slowly. On the other hand, if I’m in a lively, social mood, I might prefer a milder, more accessible cigar to share with friends.

What do you enjoy most about the social aspect of cigars, whether it’s lounges, events, or simply sharing a smoke with friends?

AMR: I enjoy the social aspect of cigars that often revolves around the sense of camaraderie, connection, and shared enjoyment. For example, the simple act of sharing a cigar with friends or family can create lasting memories and deepen relationships. It’s a moment of relaxation, reflection, and connection, allowing people to bond over a shared experience.

If you could change one misconception people have about women who enjoy cigars, what would it be?

AMR: One common misconception that I’d love to see change is the idea that women who enjoy cigars are somehow trying to emulate men or fit into a traditionally male-dominated space. The truth is, women who smoke cigars do so for the same reasons men do; for the enjoyment of the flavors, the relaxation, and the appreciation of the craftsmanship involved in creating a fine cigar. Women can have a genuine passion for cigars and can be just as knowledgeable and discerning as their male counterparts. Embracing this understanding helps break down gender stereotypes and fosters a more inclusive and diverse cigar culture where everyone feels welcome.
