Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky · 18 Years Old · 43% ABV
There’s something special about discovering a great whisky when you’re not necessarily looking for one. On a recent visit to Wheated, a Brooklyn spot known for its pizza and impressive whisky selection, I found myself spending some quality time with a pour of Bowmore 18 Year Old.
Bowmore is one of Islay’s most historic distilleries, dating back to 1779, and while the island is famous for its heavily peated, smoky whiskies, Bowmore has always struck a nice balance between smoke, fruit, and sweetness. At 18 years old, this expression has had plenty of time to develop those deeper, richer characteristics that make a well-aged Scotch worth slowing down for.
Sitting at Wheated with a glass in front of me, I was reminded that whisky doesn’t always need a special occasion. Sometimes a good pour, a comfortable atmosphere, and a little time to appreciate what’s in your glass are more than enough.
Nose
The first thing that comes through is a gentle, refined smokiness. This isn’t the aggressive, medicinal peat you might expect from some Islay whiskies. Instead, it’s softer, almost like the lingering scent of a wood fire that’s been burning for hours.
Behind the smoke are notes of dark chocolate, dried fruit, and a touch of orange peel. There’s also a pleasant sweetness that reminds me of caramel and toffee, with a little coastal saltiness hiding in the background.
Give it a few minutes in the glass, and the aromas start opening up. It’s the kind of whisky that rewards a little patience.
Taste
On the palate, Bowmore 18 is smooth, rich, and nicely balanced. Dark chocolate and toffee lead the way, followed by dried raisins, subtle citrus, and a touch of oak.
The peat smoke is definitely there, but it doesn’t dominate. Instead, it weaves through the sweeter flavors, adding depth without overpowering everything else.
There’s a slightly earthy quality to it, along with hints of roasted nuts and a gentle maritime character. At 43% ABV, it isn’t particularly aggressive, which makes it an easy whisky to sit with and enjoy.
Personally, I would have liked just a little more intensity on the palate. The flavors are enjoyable, but a slightly higher bottling strength might have given them more presence.
Finish
The finish is medium-long, with lingering dark chocolate, soft smoke, oak, and a touch of dried fruit.
As the sweetness fades, you’re left with a gentle dryness and a slightly salty, smoky character that reminds you this whisky comes from Islay.
Nothing feels harsh or out of place. It’s a relaxed, well-rounded finish that makes you want to go back for another sip.
Overall Score
89/100
Excellent · Balanced, mature, and approachable
Bowmore 18 is a whisky that doesn’t try too hard to impress, and that’s part of its appeal. It has the complexity you’d expect from an 18-year-old single malt, but it’s approachable enough that you don’t need to be a die-hard peat lover to enjoy it.
The combination of dark chocolate, dried fruit, gentle smoke, and oak works really well. My only criticism is that the 43% ABV holds it back slightly. There’s a richness here that I think could really shine with a little more strength.
Final Thoughts
Would I drink Bowmore 18 again? Absolutely.
Would I rush out and buy a bottle? That depends on the price. There are some excellent Islay whiskies out there that offer more intensity for less money, but Bowmore 18 brings something different to the table. It’s refined, balanced, and easy to appreciate without demanding your full attention.
Having it at Wheated in Brooklyn made for a particularly enjoyable experience. It’s always nice finding a place where you can explore a good whisky selection without the formality that sometimes comes with whisky tasting.
If you’re someone who enjoys a little smoke but doesn’t want it overpowering every other flavor, Bowmore 18 is definitely worth trying. It’s a reminder that Islay whisky isn’t always about how much peat you can pack into a glass. Sometimes it’s about finding the right balance.
And Bowmore 18 does that rather well.
