Imagine a space where the nuances of Nicaraguan ligero and the complexities of a perfect draw are discussed with both expertise and approachability. Welcome to the world of the Polished Puff aka Angela Canete the cigar influencer who’s opening up the often-intimidating realm of premium tobacco to a wider audience. Through her engaging reviews, thoughtful insights, and genuine enthusiasm, she’s building a community where both seasoned aficionados and curious newcomers can share their appreciation for the leaf.

What initially drew you to cigars, and how did your passion for them evolve over time?

AC: Being of Cuban descent, the aroma of cigars has always felt like home to me—there’s a sense of comfort and familiarity that’s hard to explain. My husband, David Figueroa of @cigarsocialclub, is a passionate cigar lover and was the one who introduced me to the world of cigars. He has taught me so much, and at first, I started casually, just enjoying the moment. But I quickly became captivated by the aroma, the elegance, and the sense of calm it brought. Over time, it grew into something much deeper. I began to truly appreciate the craftsmanship, the heritage, and the layers of complexity in each blend. What started as curiosity turned into a full-blown passion—one rooted in discovery, connection, and culture.

Do you have a favorite cigar that holds special meaning for you, and if so, why?

AC: The first El Güegüense by Foundation Cigars will always hold a special place in my heart. It was the cigar that made me “get it”—when the flavors, the energy, and the culture of cigars all clicked. It was the beginning of my descent into this flavorful rabbit hole, and it’s the one that made me want to explore deeper and learn more.

What has your experience been like as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated cigar culture?

AC: It’s been empowering, actually. Yes, there are moments where you feel the weight of assumptions, but for the most part, I’ve found the community to be welcoming and curious. I’ve learned to confidently take up space, not just as a woman who smokes cigars, but as a woman who appreciates and understands them. And that confidence has created space for others to do the same.

Do you think the perception of women smoking cigars is changing, and if so, how?

AC: Absolutely. There’s a growing presence of women in the cigar world who are not only participating, but leading—whether it’s on the manufacturing side, in lounges, sales, and on social media. Women are showing up with knowledge, style, and authenticity, and it’s shifting the narrative in a beautiful way.

Are there any female-led cigar brands or tobacco farms that you admire and think deserve more recognition?

AC: While there are some amazing women leading brands and operations, what really inspires me are the women across the cigar industry who are making a powerful impact in their own ways. From legacy to innovation, they each bring something unique to the table. Women like Liana & Cynthia Fuente of Arturo Fuente Cigars, Bianca Lopez with Gurkha Cigars, Leonor Abzaradel of Nova Cigars, Lissette Perez-Carrillo of Casa Carrillo, and Janny Garcia of My Father Cigars all represent passion, tradition, and strength within this space. Their dedication and presence are helping reshape the narrative, and there are so many more incredible Women of the Leaf that I admire and truly cherish. They’ve each carved a place in this industry with grace, knowledge, and authenticity—and they continue to inspire me daily.

What are some of your favorite cigar and drink pairings, and do you have any recommendations for newcomers?

AC:  Japanese whiskeys—like Hibiki, Nikka, and Yamazaki—are my go-to. I love how smooth, layered, and elegant they are. They pair beautifully with the medium to full-bodied cigars I naturally gravitate toward, enhancing the richness without overpowering the smoke. For newcomers, I’d suggest starting with a creamy Connecticut and pairing it with a good coffee or a classic Old Fashioned. Start simple, let your palate adjust, and then work your way into bolder blends and deeper pairings as you go.

How do you approach selecting a cigar—do you go by mood, occasion, or something else?

AC: It’s very mood-driven for me. Sometimes I want something bold and complex to match the craving, and other times I’m just looking for something mellow to wind down with. The setting plays a big role too—am I by the water? At a lounge? Alone or with company? It all feeds into the vibe I want to create.

What do you enjoy most about the social aspect of cigars, whether it’s lounges, events, or simply sharing a smoke with friends?

AC: Cigars have a way of slowing time. It’s about presence and connection. Some of the best conversations I’ve had happened over a shared smoke—walls come down, and there’s this unspoken camaraderie. Whether it’s an event or an impromptu backyard session, cigars bring people together in such an organic, soulful way.

If you could change one misconception people have about women who enjoy cigars, what would it be?

AC: That we’re doing it for attention. It’s wild that in 2025 we still have to say this, but women can have genuine passions that aren’t performative. Many of us smoke because we truly love the culture, the craftsmanship, and the ritual—it’s personal, not performative. The more people begin to understand that, the more inclusive and authentic this space will become for everyone.
