Initially aged for nine to twelve years in a combination of former Bourbon barrels and barrels which previously held Oloroso Sherry, Redbreast Lustau Edition spends an additional year in Spanish oak barrels seasoned with Lustau Oloroso. Personally I have become a big fan of non-aged whisky’s because they don’t carry that giant price tag that some of the other 18+ year whiskies do. So it makes it both affordable and whisky lovers can finally have a bottle they can call their own without breaking the bank.
Irish Whisky is something interesting, because I find it hard for them to compete with all the variety that scotch offers. However, once in a while a great whisky will be released that will find itself in the Scotch space as a clear contender. To me this is one of those whiskies.
Name: Redbreast Single Pot Still Lustau Edition Sherry Finish
Region: Ireland
Nose: Very Sherry and quite strong, lots of Fruits including Prunes and Dates. Dark Chocolate towards the end of the smell. Drop of water opens up the sweetness of the sherry and the chocolate. Becomes quite pleasant.
Palate: Vanilla and sherry with more sweetness. The Sherry has a distinct quality, its almost like dry sherry, if there is such a thing.
Finish: Quite long and spicy. Almost feels like it goes on for a few minutes after the initial taste in your mouth.
